Blog Tour...At First Blush by Jeanie Grey

AtFirstBlushBTBanner At First Blush Cover 9006a-add-to-goodreads-button31 button synopsis
“There was no such thing as a soulmate. As for the intense connection…well, it must have been her imagination. There was no man who would instinctively understand her, no man who could read her mind. No man who could turn her on with just a look or a word, no man whose touch would override her reason and turn her into the embodiment of passion. And the sooner she let go of that fantasy completely, the sooner she could approach romantic relationships with a clear head and appreciate what she had instead of pining over everything she imagined she was missing.”
SERRAN WINTERS is determined to let the fantasy of Nick Enfield go. So why does she find herself asking him to dinner while on tour with her latest romance novel? Perhaps it's because she feels safe in disguise as her pseudonym, Jane Garfield. Besides, it's only a couple of hours...until a hurricane leaves her stranded at his house for three days.
Despite NICK ENFIELD’s deep hurt and growing bitterness since his divorce, something about the romance author entrances him from the first moment he sees her. But when he discovers she’s married, he’s determined to resist the intense attraction between them in spite of her mixed signals. If only his body’s reaction to her weren’t making it so hard to keep her marital status in mind.
At First Blush is a story about fantasy versus reality in love and romance, the nature of attraction and connection, and the reasons we choose to fight or follow our impulses.

Nick stepped into the bookstore, slightly dazed, and blinked under the lights. The clouds had come in heavy already, dimming the sky to a twilight despite the fact that it was only four-thirty in the afternoon on an August Monday, and the bookstore was comparatively bright. It was also, he noticed, unusually busy. A line of maybe forty people snaked around and between shelves, ending at a sturdy oak table covered in stacks of paperback books. A sign was propped upright on the table, and he could just make out the words, Author signing TODAY! Odd then that there was no one behind the table. Maybe the author was late. He glanced next at the register and saw a second line almost as long as the first. Forget it. Between the crush of bodies and the long line for the register, it would take him ages to find a book and get out of here. He didn’t even really want to read tonight anyway. He’d much rather have a few beers and put on an action flick that would drown out the sounds of the storm. He was about to turn around and walk back out the door when something—a shift in the air current or movement in the corner of his eye—caused him to look toward the back corner of the bookstore just in time to see the bathroom door open and a woman come out. As soon as he saw her, his heart kicked, his chest constricted, his breath hitched, and his pants got a little tighter in the crotch. Time slowed. She had full, rosy lips, a round face, and a severe black bob that must’ve been dyed because her eyebrows were several shades lighter. The color of her hair threw into further contrast the paleness of her skin; here was a woman who probably couldn’t tan if she tried. She was full-figured, with wide hips, a round ass, and long legs. She wore a cream-colored skirt down to her knees, red heels, and a white button-up shirt with a high collar that opened in a narrow but deep V and showed a hint of ample cleavage. There was something unconsciously sensual in her movements as she strode across the store, shoulders back and chin level, making eye contact with everyone in her path and smiling as if she owned the place. He didn’t think he’d ever met a woman like her, and yet there was something vaguely familiar about her. Unconsciously, Nick moved forward three steps. When she passed right in front of him, she was looking in the other direction. Nonetheless, he could make out the color of her almond-shaped eyes: a cornflower blue that reminded him of a summer sky in a painting of the Dutch countryside. And then she was past him, leaving in her wake a faint aroma of vanilla and spice. He inhaled deeply, the tightness in his chest telling him he must’ve been holding his breath. His eyes followed her, and he was entranced by her sashaying hips as she threaded her way through the crowd. When she reached the book signing table, she sat down behind it.

I look at her and chuckle lightly and go back to enjoying the show on the stage in front of me. Addison gets hooked up to her mic for the second time and I escape back behind the stage to the other side because I know Dex will come off stage shortly and I want to be there when he does. They finish up the song and my heart starts to flutter. Dex makes eye contact with me. His steel grey eyes penetrate me and cause me to shiver and my already heated sex to fire up. The little ball of nerves is on fire as he narrows his eyes at me. He’s on a rampage, but he’s not angry. He charges off of the stage first and Addison giggles as she passes him. Excitement, terror and pure lust course hotly through my veins. I back up toward the wall, trying to put some distance between us before he crushes me. But I have no outlet, nowhere to go. Fuck, he knows this. I put my hands up in self-defense, but he smirks. Grabbing my wrists, he spreads my arms wide and then over my head, pinning me to the wall. His lips crash hard onto mine. He smells like Dex, heady and sweaty, but it’s fucking sexy as hell. He steals my breath away the moment his tongue slides inside, seeking mine. He abruptly pulls back, he is breathing heavy. “You.” Kiss. “Made.” Kiss. “Me.” Kiss. “Pop my stick.” Lick across my lips. “You made me lose my place.” He kisses me again. “You made me screw up.” I give him a wicked chuckle. “You naughty girl.” “Think about what you just said.” I’m still laughing. “Well, that is how fucking gorgeous you look tonight.” “Shut up,” I tell him. He pulls back. “Shut up and fucking kiss me, you idiot.” He smiles wider than I’ve ever seen him smile before and he presses his lips and sweaty body against mine and I’m completely and totally lost in his kiss. His lips, his tongue, his body pressed against me. His knee slides between my legs and I writhe against him and he groans. After a few more beats, he breaks the kiss. “We need to talk,” he whispers. “Yeah, we do.” “Stay?” “Yes,” I breathe. “Promise?” “I promise.” He slowly lets me go, like he knew I was going to be unsteady on my feet and he doesn’t want me to fall. Once I’m situated, he goes and grabs three bottles of water. He tucks one under his arm, then hands me one. I smile as we both open our bottles. He downs his in two swallows and immediately goes for the other one and downs that one equally as fast. I take a big pull off of mine and hand it over to him. He smirks, takes it and drinks it. “Gotta go,” he breathes. “Get back on the other side of the stage,” he says as a command. ‘Yes, sir.” He scowls at me, but then smiles and goes back on stage.

Hayley “You know you can take the blindfold off and I still won’t know where we’re going,” I complain although I secretly love the mystery behind our early morning drive. I hear Max laugh beside me and feel my heart warm when he takes my hand and squeezes it. “Almost there,” he says for the third time since we left our apartment. “A hint?” I say again, practically jumping in my seat on the passenger side of Max’s car. “Just one hint.” He sighs and I smile, knowing I’ve won this little battle. “You think you’ve seen the sunrise, but never quite like this.” “Okay, Riddler. That wasn’t helpful at all.” I pout while I mull over his words. We’re gonna see the sunrise, but in a different way. So, we’re not going to the beach. There are no mountains in South Florida. So what does that leave? “Scuba diving?” I ask and he lets out a loud bark of laughter as I feel the car stop. Does that mean we’re here or that he’s at another red light? “Yeah, Hay,” he agrees, brushing the hair away from my face so he can kiss the side of my mouth. “We’re gonna see the sunrise from twenty feet under water. The crepes you made might get a bit soggy, but it’s the latest thing.” I’d made crepes early this morning when Max told me he was taking me somewhere as a surprise the night before. God forbid I let either of our stomachs grow hungry and ruin whatever he has planned for us. I stick my tongue out at him and yelp when he bites it, but sink into his kiss, giving him my soul. “We’re here,” he says, after ending our kiss and already, I miss his breath on me. He gently takes off my blindfold and I blink several times to get my eyes accustomed to the predawn light, but I still don’t see much of anything. Unless a dark, open field is my big surprise. I look back at him curiously and smile when I imagine us making love on a blanket with nothing but nature around us as the sun rises. I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him in for another kiss. “I love it,” I tell him between kisses and feel his lips turn into a smile. “I’m glad, but you haven’t seen your surprise yet. Over there.” He points to our left and I squint my eyes, only seeing the silhouette of something very large. Whatever it is, it is so large, it takes up a huge amount of space on the ground and in the air. We walk toward the direction of my surprise and I see what seems to be some sort of flame floating inside the silhouette. Max takes my hand and leads me towards it and I can’t even begin to guess what it is, but I feel my heartbeat quicken as we get closer. My eyebrows furrow together and I stare in the direction of my surprise with intense focus. I stop suddenly when finally, I see it and my smile builds slowly across my face. A hot air balloon! I squeal and jump then throw myself at Max, hugging him with my arms and legs. “You like?” he asks. “I love! But nowhere near as much as I love you.” My breath catches in my throat as I pull Max the rest of the way towards our hot air balloon. The desire to explore the balloon is strong, but not as strong as my need to hug Max. So I hug him, molding our bodies flat against one another. A soft cough interrupts our embrace and Max spins around with me still latched onto him like a koala. After the mandatory introductions are made and safety instructions are told, we climb into the basket of our hot air balloon with our guide and basket of crepes. Max puts his arms around my waist and I lean into him as we softly float off the ground. Once we’re in the air, I feel it—the freedom I envy every time I see a bird in flight. I watch the city grow smaller as we float higher and higher in the atmosphere. The wind tickles my nose and I close my eyes to enhance the scent of the fresh, warm air. This is freedom. In Max’s arms, I watch the sunrise as it paints the clear sky in an explosion of orange, red, and gold. This is to live. To love. .

Viola didn’t want to leave until she was certain Gertrude was safe. But when a wave of people ran down the street in panic, she knew it was time to go. They exited the flat and ran back towards her home. Viola looked over her shoulder as she jogged, letting out a scream at the sight of planes descending towards them.
Lori, run!”
The roar in her ears intensified, and she stumbled as an explosion rocked the ground. Screams echoed off the buildings as gunfire roared up the street, sending chunks of brick and concrete into the air like flying projectiles.
Viola covered her head with both hands and ran as hard as she could. Beside her, Lori struggled in her heels, limping like she was wounded.
I need to stop,” she screamed. “One of my heels is broken.”
Viola reached out for her hand and gripped it tight. “Don’t worry about that. The flat isn’t far. I can see it. Run faster!”
Enemy fire flew up the street in a wave of destruction, chewing up concrete, parked automobiles and innocent victims trying to flee. The noise was deafening, and Viola couldn’t hear the words coming out of Lori’s mouth.
Then she was yanked downwards, landing hard on one knee. The pull on her hand released, and she turned to where Lori once stood. Her friend lay dead, wide-eyed on the ground, blood pooling from open wounds on her body. Viola shrieked and fell backwards onto a pile of debris. “Lori! No, no!”
The sound of explosions averted her gaze to the sky. A formation of planes headed towards the horizon, dropping little black dots onto the city below them. Over the ringing in her ears, she heard the repetitive boom, boom, boom as each bomb made impact. Viola collapsed to the ground and wept, listening to the chatter of survivors exiting their shelters to the horror that awaited them.
