Deciding to get some fresh air, I headed toward the path along the ocean. The pain in my head had subsided and the ocean gave me an escape from the craziness I was going through. I wasn’t sure if it was the hypnotic motion of the waves or the calming sound they made crashing against the rocks. Maybe it was something else, but the ocean had a way of clearing my head. I couldn’t help but notice a beautiful woman with long, golden hair sitting on the rocks, gazing into the horizon. On a rock next to her sat an urn. My heart sank in my chest. She was so young and I wondered who she’d lost. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so bad about my own life. Someone she loved was gone forever and she was here alone to say goodbye. Her trembling lip told me how sad and broken she must feel. I couldn’t imagine doing something like this alone. Didn’t she have any family? Or friends? The need to hear what she was saying drew me to her, so I edged closer, but she didn’t see me in her peripheral vision. At least she didn’t look over in my direction. Why would she? She was lost in her own thoughts…grief. Tears streamed down her angelic face. I wanted to wipe them away and comfort her, but I kept myself at bay. “How do I say goodbye to you, Dane? You’re the only one who has loved me, taken care of me, protected me. When you died, part of me died too. Part of my soul went with you and I don’t know if I’ll ever get it back. I love you so much and I always will.” Her words were gut-wrenching and I assumed she was talking about a man she had been in love with. I wanted a woman to love me like that. I thought I had found it with Angelina, but she’d never seemed as sincere as this woman before me. An overwhelming force took over and my heart began racing. I wanted to sit next to her, wrap my arms around her, and tell her everything was going to be okay. She wasn’t alone. Her shoulders slightly shook as more tears raced down her cheeks. She continued pouring her heart out. “This just isn’t fair. You were too young to die. We had so much life to live together. So many things to do. Some days, I don’t know how I live without you. It wasn’t supposed to be this way.” Then she bowed her head. I found myself bowing so I could pray silently for her. “Dear Heavenly Father. Thank you so much for the gift of my husband Dane. You brought him into my life at just the right moment and used him to bless me more than I ever thought possible. I’m grateful that You love me so much to have given me such an amazing man. I commit Dane to You, knowing he is with You in Heaven. Please help me to move on in my life and have a life that You deem worthy. I love you, Lord, and want to honor You all the days of my life. Amen.” Listening to her words made me choke up. I’d gone to church with my family when I was a kid. But now I basically went at Christmas and Easter for my mom. Her prayer was so heartfelt, so honest. Was this beauty for real? Not only did she look like an angel, she had a genuine heart filled with love. She was a rare find. Other than my mom and sisters, I couldn’t remember ever knowing someone like her, a woman with such great faith. She stood up with the urn in her trembling hands, removed the cover, moved to the edge of the rocks, and began tossing her husband’s ashes into the ocean. The wind had picked up and I could see her struggling with the metal container. Her next movement was about to become her undoing as her foot slipped and I began watching in slow motion as her body was falling. Reacting quickly, I rushed to her, grabbing her hand, causing the urn to fall into the ocean. Instantly, she was in my arms, as I pulled her into my body to help ground her feet. Her crystal blue eyes met mine and we just took each other in for a moment. I couldn’t break away from the gaze of her eyes and I wanted nothing more than to crush my mouth to hers, kissing her like she deserved. A long, slow, wet kiss that would make her melt into me. Her juicy lips were beckoning me to them. Knowing that acting on impulse would probably get me slapped, I opted to use my mouth for talking instead. “Are you okay?” “I think so. How did you catch me? I thought I was falling in for sure.” “I was nearby and saw you lose your footing. I guess I have fast reflexes.” She looked around at the rocks below and the ocean lapping at them. “It’s gone,” she said, her voice cracking. “I’m sorry,” I said. “I couldn’t grab both you and the urn.” Looking back up at me she said, “Maybe it’s all for the best. Obviously, I wasn’t meant to keep it.” I could see the sadness well up in her baby blues. I tucked some strands of hair behind her ear. “You’re really brave. Letting go is very hard to do.” She smiled slightly and tilted her head. Searching my eyes, she just kept staring at me. Lost. She was lost and I wanted to save her. “Thank you for catching me,” she said, her eyes still piercing mine. I couldn’t stop looking at her beautiful face. “I’m just glad I got to you in time. The water is looking pretty rough right now.” My arms were still around her and then it dawned on me that her arms were around my body too. Keeping her in my arms was all I wanted to do. This felt right…natural. How was this possible? “Looks like you saved me. How am I ever going to repay you?” “Have dinner with me tonight and we’ll consider it payment in full.” She looked down for a brief moment, clearly contemplating my invitation. Maybe I was being too forward, but I didn’t care. How else was I going to see her again? “Okay,” she said hesitantly. “My name is Lindy Bernard, by the way.” “I’m Trace. Trace Michaels. I’ll make reservations for us at The Sea House.” “Sounds perfect. How about seven?” “Seven works.” “Okay, well, I’ll see you then. Thanks again for catching me,” she said letting go of my arms. Feeling the heat of her body leaving mine, I instantly wanted her close to me again. Sadly, I had to let go of her now. “Glad I could be of service. I’ll be waiting for you at seven.” We each smiled and Lindy began making her way back to the path. I watched her walk away and said my own prayer to God that she would show up at the restaurant. It surprised me how much I wanted her to show. My heart was still hurt about losing my fiancĂ©e, but strangely, Lindy’s gentleness felt like…a balm. I needed her to have dinner with me. Her absence had already gripped my heart and I didn’t want to wait hours to see her again. But I had no choice.

button synopsis
He’s trying to protect his heart… She’s a shell of the girl she once was… Can he chase away the demons threatening to destroy her?
Mackenzie Delano craves control. After tragedy strikes during her freshman year of college, she compensates for the helplessness she felt by micro-managing every aspect of her life, from her business life to her social life…to her love life. But she wasn’t expecting to cross paths with a mysterious man who seems to invade her every thought. Tyler Burnham has been living his life with one rule in mind…never fall in love. Focusing solely on his career, he is able to remain a detached observer of life… Until a case is dropped in his lap, forcing him to form an intimate relationship with a sharp-tongued woman in order to obtain the location of a man deemed an enemy of the State. When Tyler finds himself falling for Mackenzie, will he be able push his feelings aside and recover the information he needs? Or will he put the mission and their lives at risk to follow his heart? Chasing The Dragon is the first installment of a two part series of deception and betrayal where nothing is as it seems. ***Note - Chasing The Dragon is the first book in a two-book duet and is a spin-off of T.K. Leigh's USA Today Best Selling Beautiful Mess series. It is not necessary to have read that series in order to read this duet, but it will contain a mild spoiler from the third book in the Beautiful Mess series, Gorgeous Chaos.***

I was gifted and ARC ecopy of this book for an honest review.  I started this book twice.  It's one of those books that you definitely need to dedicate time to reading just this work and nothing else.  I've never read a work by this author and I didn't know what to expect with this work. I'm in bittersweet mode about this book.  I enjoyed the read, but the ending killed me.  When I read the last page, I seriously wanted to scream or send a message to the author.  I was so vested in this book that I spent every moment that I could reading it.  I am now a fan of T.K. Leigh, even if I do still want to send a special message to her about what she did with this work.

The story of Mackenzie and Tyler will keep you on your toes.  It will have you wanting to read more.  It will have you sitting on edge as you try to figure out what's fact and what's not.  The relationship between these two characters is thrilling.  I giggled and snickered as I read through the novel.

My honest review would have to include the fact that the cover would not have gotten me to read the work.  I'd heard good things about T.K. Leigh's books and decided to sign up to read this one.  Had I not known the name, then I probably wouldn't have given it a chance.  The second thing that threw me off and would have deterred me would have been the "Introduction" or the first lines of the work.  I thought for sure the work was going to go an entirely different direction.  I thought it might have been about a person with a possible drug problem.  I believe that was mostly due to my interpretation of the Author's words.

I will say that I enjoyed this work and I'm so glad that I gave it a chance.  I cannot wait to see what comes next, but I'll have to along with everyone else.

“Dance with me, Mackenzie,” he said, holding my hand in his, sensually placing the other just below my hip bone. “What are you−” “Shhh…,” he admonished, expertly leading me in our dance, the band playing Cole Porter’s Every Time We Say Goodbye. “Just enjoy it and don’t think.” I simply nodded, turning my head to scan the restaurant. “Mackenzie, eyes on me. I need to know you’re with me.” I snapped my eyes back to his, my mouth slightly agape as my heart pounded in my chest. He was warm and spellbinding. The way he held me in his arms comforted me and made me feel as if they were made to hold me. “Are you with me?” he asked, raising his eyebrows. “Yes,” I said, my voice soft. He leaned toward me and the bit of stubble on his chin brushed my skin. “Yes what?” he whispered. “I’m with you.” The corners of his lips turned up slightly and there was a spark about him that wasn’t present yesterday. “I like the sound of that, Miss Delano.” He pulled me closer and I tilted my head to peer into his striking eyes, needing the connection I felt at that moment. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced, all because of a well-placed hand, a sinfully sexy voice, eyes that made me want to melt, and arms that felt like home. “Who would have thought that the Mackenzie whose lips I couldn’t stop seeing in my dreams last night would turn out to be Mackenzie Delano, proprietor of South Padre’s hottest new spot?” “How did−” “Shhh,” he said once more. “You think too much. Just enjoy the moment because it’s over once the band plays the final note to this melody.” I snapped my mouth shut, a strange awareness of loss washing over me at the prospect of this complete stranger walking away from me once the song came to an end, wondering if I would ever see him again. “You’re a lovely dancer, Miss Delano,” he commented. “Thank you,” I answered, unsure of whether to say anything further. He seemed to be in complete control of the dance, of his words…and of mine. And, for the first time, I was okay with someone else calling the shots. “You have a dancer’s body. I’m confident you’ve bewitched quite a few men with the way you can seamlessly navigate the dance floor.” He leaned toward me and whispered, “I must confess… You’ve bewitched me.” His voice was sweet as it crooned in my ear, and I was left a silent, blubbering mute, the sincerity in his declaration sparking a renewed sense of longing I had ignored for years. My breathing grew ragged, and I was unable to formulate any response. I simply lost myself in the moment of our dance, wanting his sensual words to ring in the recesses of my mind for all eternity. I wished I could have recorded his voice murmuring those endearing words to me so I could replay them over and over again when I needed to feel something I didn’t think I would ever feel again. He molded my frame to his, our bodies swaying to the classic tune, and began to sing along with the band. I imagined he was singing to me, and me alone. His voice was deep and guttural, but sweet as he leaned toward my neck and crooned the last verse into my ear. I closed my eyes, losing myself in his warmth, his voice, his everything. All too soon, the final note rang out, silence encompassing the room, but we continued to sway to the music in our heads, our rhythm perfectly in tune to each other. A loud drum kick echoed, startling me, and I opened my eyes, almost expecting it all to be a dream. But it wasn’t, and I was met with my mysterious stranger’s strong face. Time stood still as we simply stared at each other, neither one of us moving. I licked my dry lips, nerves causing my breathing to grow more intense and labored. He grabbed my hand and brought it to his soft lips, placing a kiss on it. The contact caused a rush of adrenaline to run through me. Before I could ask his name, he was gone, leaving me stunned and alone once more.

Excerpt
Viola didn’t want to leave until she was certain Gertrude was safe. But when a wave of people ran down the street in panic, she knew it was time to go. They exited the flat and ran back towards her home. Viola looked over her shoulder as she jogged, letting out a scream at the sight of planes descending towards them.
Lori, run!”
The roar in her ears intensified, and she stumbled as an explosion rocked the ground. Screams echoed off the buildings as gunfire roared up the street, sending chunks of brick and concrete into the air like flying projectiles.
Viola covered her head with both hands and ran as hard as she could. Beside her, Lori struggled in her heels, limping like she was wounded.
I need to stop,” she screamed. “One of my heels is broken.”
Viola reached out for her hand and gripped it tight. “Don’t worry about that. The flat isn’t far. I can see it. Run faster!”
Enemy fire flew up the street in a wave of destruction, chewing up concrete, parked automobiles and innocent victims trying to flee. The noise was deafening, and Viola couldn’t hear the words coming out of Lori’s mouth.
Then she was yanked downwards, landing hard on one knee. The pull on her hand released, and she turned to where Lori once stood. Her friend lay dead, wide-eyed on the ground, blood pooling from open wounds on her body. Viola shrieked and fell backwards onto a pile of debris. “Lori! No, no!”
The sound of explosions averted her gaze to the sky. A formation of planes headed towards the horizon, dropping little black dots onto the city below them. Over the ringing in her ears, she heard the repetitive boom, boom, boom as each bomb made impact. Viola collapsed to the ground and wept, listening to the chatter of survivors exiting their shelters to the horror that awaited them.

(This is the third book in the Pepper Jones series. The following description contains spoilers for Pepped Up and All Pepped Up. It is highly recommended that you read the books in order.)

Pepper is finally a senior, and she’s determined to defend her national cross-country title. Although Jace is busy with the demands of college football, he’s still at Pepper’s side, supporting her goals. But is she taking her renewed enthusiasm for training too far?

As Jace and Pepper focus on their athletic ambitions, they discover that Jace’s social status has followed him to college, despite his attempt to keep a low profile. With her boyfriend as an idol on campus, Pepper discovers that she might just be a target to those who find Jace threatening.

Are Jace and Pepper strong enough to withstand the pressure from those who want something from them? It won’t be easy fighting for her title and her boyfriend, but nothing easy is worth winning… or keeping.

excerpt

Spending the night in Jace Wilder’s dorm room isn’t exactly the same as sprinting up a hill as fast as I can, but it has a similar effect. When I close my eyes to fall asleep, Jace’s arm draped lazily across me, my emotions are under control. The anger and confusion haven’t disappeared entirely, but Jace’s strength and love help wash them away from the surface so I can breathe freely again. His steady breathing beside me tells me that being with me helps to soothe his tension as well. Knowing this, I fall asleep with a smile on my face. We might have people against us, but they don’t know what they’re fighting against.
